What are Dental Implants?
Essentially, dental implants are titanium posts surgically inserted into the jaw bone. Because of the biocompatible nature of titanium, they integrate securely into the jawbone and provide a permanent and sturdy base for restorations. Single crowns, bridges, and even full arcs of dentures benefit from the support of dental implants.
But, because of the fundamental bone-integration aspect, not every patient is ready for their implants just yet. Those who have been missing teeth for a significant amount of time may have undergone a process called bone resorption. Without the stimulation of a tooth root or implant post, the bone will shrink in size. Dr. Harrington can only place implants in full, robust jaw bones.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Ideally, dental implant patients will have recently lost their teeth, and will have not yet experienced bone loss; however, this does not disqualify those who have. In this case, Dr. Harrington will recommend a bone graft surgery to prepare the jaw. This procedure involves grafting patient bone onto the bone loss site and allowing time for the bone to integrate. Once integrated, the patient is ready for their implant.
Why Choose Dental Implants?
Traditional tooth replacement options like crowns, bridges, and dentures do nothing to stimulate the jaw bone. Without stimulation, the jaw bone will shrink in a process called accelerated bone resorption. Only dental implants ensure the continued health of the jaw bone and integrity of the facial structure.
The long-term effects of bone resorption are pronounced. The shape of the face will change, giving a prematurely-aged appearance. Patients will have a less chewing force and may lose the ability to eat hard, tough, or crunchy foods.
